Filmmaking Central, Looks, & Me

Filmmaking CentralThe always lively David Basulto and I had a chat late last week about the upcoming book on his show Filmmaking Central – I draw out a couple of new additions to the book, including a great roto tip I received from a reader of the previous edition and incorporated into this book (I love learning things I didn’t know and liberally crediting the source, so if you’re holding onto something great I didn’t cover in the book, email me).

We also rapped about fxphd.com and even Magic Bullet Looks 3 (for which, incidentally, I contributed documentation, in case you want to read “conflict of interest” into the sentence which follows). Now that I’m hearing so many complaints about how complicated and buggy Apple Color is (I only finally got around to upgraded Final Cut Studio a few days ago and haven’t personally banged on it), maybe Red Giant has been offered a golden opportunity: Looks is intuitive, non-buggy and and ships with over 100 gorgeous and compelling presets, all of which can then be tweaked to taste.

Filmmaking Central, by the way, is the #3 most popular podcast in the TV & Film category according to Podcast Alley (and since the #1 site is about moviegoing and the #2 about Star Wars, it’s actually the #1 podcast about actual filmmaking). Its success is due not only to having been one of the earliest podcasts on the topic but moreover Dave’s infectious enthusiasm and talent for connecting with people (and sponsors!).
